Patriarch Kirill equated denial of coronavirus with atheism

Kind of a weird conclusion

Following the liturgy on January 6, 2021, at the Christ the Savior Cathedral  Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill said that denial of coronavirus is just as dangerous as disbelief in God, reports.

Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church

Patriarch Kirill is of the view that those who deny the coronavirus and atheists are foolish people.

“I know that there are people who don’t believe in anything – they don’t believe in illness or danger, they don’t follow all the medical advice. But we, religious Christians, know that not only these people are foolish – I guess they might be called that – there are lots of those in this world. But also there are many people who do not believe in God. <…> It is very dangerous when people do not believe in God, I would say it’s fatal. At the present time it’s extremely dangerous when people do not believe in the spread of the virus and do not protect themselves from this infection, ”- ITAR-TASS cites Patriarch Kirill.

Of course, denying the coronavirus is stupid. It is unclear, however, what the virus has to do with atheism in the first place. Patriarch dragged it in but that kind of comparison just doesn’t hold water.

It should be noted that at the very beginning of the pandemic, the Russian Orthodox Church (hereinafter the ROC) took some controversial steps and refused to restrict access to churches. Back in April 2020, for example, Patriarch Kirill organized and held a prayer service “getting rid of the coronavirus.” But this event predictably didn’t produce the hoped-for results.

You can recall other statements by representatives of the ROC regarding the disease, for example, a top-ranking priest, Archpriest Smirnov (who died from coronavirus), who at first considered the coronavirus useful.

It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that Patriarch Kirill is forced to use these populist affirmations. The fact that coronavirus can only be defeated by taking preventive measures is so obvious, anyone could get it.

Since the very beginning of the pandemic, the ROC has done everything by its actions to make religious people think the coronavirus is kind of like a slight cold. But now the representatives of the ROC have radically changed their rhetoric and are trying to blame everyone but themselves for being irresponsible. That is a stupid thing to do.

It’s like a shepherd trying to keep his sheep, that is actually the business that pays well.
