How another accident in frozen Norilsk cost oligarch Vladimir Potanin around $1.4 billion
The fortune of the president of Norilsk Nickel (NorNikel) – Vladimir Potanin, has decreased to $ 29.9 billion (minus $1.4 billion) as a result of the fall in the company’s value. The fall was caused by another accident in Norilsk, RBC reports.
On the night of February 19-20, 2021, as a result of the collapse at the processing plant, three workers were killed and five more injured. The factory belongs to a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel.
According to preliminary data from the investigation, the defects were identified back in the summer of 2018. However, the elimination of identified defects in the collapsed gallery of the dressing shop was started only three years later.
This is not the first accident at an enterprise controlled by Norilsk Nickel. The largest environmental disaster in modern Russia occurred at one of their subsidiaries in May 2020. Many assumptions were made about the reasons as to what happened. The aforementioned traditionally couldn’t go without accusations against the USSR – that apparently they were badly designed in the Union. What we find astounding is that modern Russian business is still running off the remnants of Soviet infrastructure build decades ago.
Surely, as in the case of the accident at TPP-3 in Norilsk, the “odd ones out” (accused) ones will be found very quickly. It is reported that some four people have already been detained, for what purpose, is yet unclear.
However, in retrospect, there is only one problem – the deterioration of the Soviet infrastructure and the lack of proper management by Russia’s current bourgeois government. All this is a consequence of the pursuit of profit, which literally takes away human lives and destroys the environment we live in.
